About 3 weeks ago, my Digital Rebel--which I had owned barely a month (but
had bought used at Fred Miranda)--it broke. It was the secondary mirror. As
I bought it used, I had to pay to have it fixed. It's still not done, the
local shop fixing it is waiting for the part from Canon to arrive. (They
will charge $135 or so, Canon would've been $200 or so.)

Thing is, this experience has left me upset, and I've heard from a number of
other DR users who've had the exact same thing happen to them also--and
between it all, I'm considering selling the DR when I get it back and
getting a D70. Before I get the flames, let me explain--I'm not being
anti-Canon, and in fact I was very excited when I got the camera. Moving
into D-SLR territory was truly exciting for me, and I was delighted to get
the DR--even though I'd used Nikon for years.

But after this, I don't know. Does this mean I've purchaed a lemon? Or is
this just "one of those things" not necessarily a harbinger of more bad
things to come? What are your guys' experiences?

Thoughts?

DR is certainly not built as pro quality. BTW, how many shutter
operations on that camera? I had the DR for 11 months and had shot over
5000 frames without any problems.

I am ordering a 20D. I used one for a week and like it alot. Canon
claimed that they engineered the shutters to be durable. If you want to
upgrade, this is the dream machine. I like the speed and really solid
construction. Mind you, DR isn't flimsy but 20D is well made. You do get
what you pay for. I ordered mine from buydig.com. They called me once to
confirm the address and it's shipped the same day. The only gripe is
they shipped FedEx Saver (the freebie option I chose). Even though it's
coming from NJ to CT, FedEx is holding the camera for 5 days. If it were
UPS, it would have arrived in one day!

I ordered my 300D from BeachCamera (same as buydig). I also chose the
FedEx Saver option and it reached Maryland in two days :) Some other
stuff I ordered from online stores also got shipped via the store's
free shipping offer and most of them are 5-day shipping schemes. But
none take that long, its usually just 2-3 days.

It has about 9,000. Nothing else has gone wrong except for the secondary
mirror (the pin broke, the repairman told me), but I guess I'm just ticked
off that it happened less than a month in--and I'm wondering if the general
trend is when something like this happens more trouble usually follows, or
not necessarily so.

Well, I owned all Nikons up til now, and I guess--all the favorable reviews
of the 20D notwithstanding--this experience is making me wonder if I
should've stayed with Nikon all along.

My DR has been going great for almost a year now, no problems.
All products have sample defects; we live in an imperfect world.
Your *used* camera failed; bummer! Really.
But I think you're over-reacting by seriously considering ditching the
DR. Yes, others have had the same thig happen. So whatever you get to
replace it will also have problems; it's the nature of things. *Your*
sample may not exhibit these failures, but the product will have them
nonetheless.
Wait for it to come back, and try again. I think you'll like the
camera.

I have heard people had a mirror stuck issue with their D70. This
doesn't mean it is not any unreliable. With dSLR, people simply snap
away a lot more often than their film counterpart.

I understand speanding $125 out of whatever you paid for the DR,
(perhaps $500?) is a lot of money. When I get the 20D, as soon as FedEx
gives it to me, I wouldn't worry and just keep taking pictures. $200 to
replace the shutter is peanut after you've taken 10K, 20K of pictures
with hundreds and thousands of keepers. My lenses cost a lot more than
the body alone.

If you like the camera, keep it. I would worry about my car breaking
down in the highway that can endangerous my life, rather than a camera
breaking down. Enjoy taking photos instead.

I've had mine since Nov. 2003. Never had any problems. Keep in mind this
camera has far outsold any other DSLR so any problems seemed to be
magnified. If mine broke I'd likely say something about it in this group as
well.

I'd keep it and save for a higher resolution model down the road. Switching
systems can be costly.

You probably should have. What made you "jump ship" in the first place?

Mine's doing nicely, nearing 2300 shots in the last 8 months or so. Of
course, once of the problems you run into buying used is that you have
no real knowledge of the history of that camera. For all you know, the
guy could have banged away the secondary mirror with a screwdriver just
before you took possession. It could be a weakness in that particular
camera, or it could be the result of poor handling; there's just no way
to know.
