I have an 18mo. old Dell Inspiron 1100 (ya, the cheap one).
It won't turn on; The green light on the front of it turns on, and you
can hear the fan, but that's it. The little lights at the top of the
keyboard don't light. The screen is black.
I've tried turning it on with and without the AC line. Removed battery
and put it back in. Nothing.
It did have its' motherboard replaced by Dell about 6mo ago (when it
was still under warranty) due to it not booting up. It would get a
fatal error and shutoff. Worked fine until yesterday...

Is this a question, or simply an obituary?

Hmm... I wonder if it's a matter of a dead battery. Do you have a
second battery you could try?

it will start without the battery, try hooking it up to an external monitor.

Some laptops won't start with a dead CMOS battery. Not the main
battery, the tiny one INSIDE the computer used to keep the CMOS memory
alive.
