Upgrade worth it?

Im looking to update my system i currently have the following:

Athlon X2 4400+
Gigabyte M57SLi-S4
8800 GT
play games at 1440 x 900 res.
Vista Premium 32

I have little money was wondering would it be worth upgrading to this set up.

Since the motherboard supports the AM3 chips i was thinking of just getting a AMD Phenom II X4 945 and replacing the above and getting a ATI 5770.

I can get both the CPU and GPU for £300 including an aftermarket cooler.
I also have my hands on windows 7 64 bit too so was thinking of getting a 1tb hardrive fpr another £44 and installing the new O/S.

The question is would i notice any improvements and would they be significant at the gaming res im playing at to bother?

More about upgrade worth
  1. forgot to mention i have 4gb of ddr2 800mhz ram
  2. If you plan to get a new monitor eventually and game at high resolutions you can get the Athlon II X3 440 + HD 5850 for under £300.

Or the AMD Athlon II X4 635, both good for gaming.

For 1440x900 the 5770 is very good even overkill and your current 8800 GT isn't bad at all at that resolution so the improvement might not be very significant. I suppose you can play pretty much all the games.

Or you can buy a monitor, say:

    a HD 5770, say

and the Athlon II X3 440 for £338.11.
  3. +1 for the recommendations by mosox.
  4. Another +1.
8800gt can still serve you well if you are aiming for HD5770.
