Cpu for gaming?

I am looking to build a new gaming rig using an AMD setup due to price issues and was deciding between the amd x4 965 or the amd x6 1090T and was wondering what would be better overall in performance without OCing and only for gaming?

  1. They would be about the same, no noticeable difference, though you could easily knock $20 off your build by going with a 955.
  2. If only for gaming you'd be wasting money buying the Hex-core
no game will use all the cores yet, +1 to Etk's suggestion, get a 955 and tweak it a little
    Moto
  3. What is the rest of your setup? Especially which video card?
  4. SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 6870 1GB 256-bit is the video card I will be using
  5. nah a hex core is 90% pointless right now, your better going for a quad core CPU :) unless your looking to do video edit lol
  6. The Phenom II 955 will serve you well.

Just make sure it is C3 stepping (this makes it the exact same CPU as the 965) and up the multiplier as desired.
  7. X6 1090t has turbo core technology..I think you should go for X6 1090t

The x6 only benefits from a select few games, and the benefit isn't nearly worth the premium.

Turbo is not going to change that. :)

For a gaming machine, go for the 955.
  9. Not sure if it helps I really only play MMO's on my PC.
  10. Even more reason to stick with the quad.
Get the 955 and set the multiplier up x2 or more.
  11. Phenom II x4 955 highly recommended for your usage. One of the better value gaming cpu I think. :)

Neither CPU will hold your setup back and in 95% of today's games, they will perform the same since 95% of today's games cannot use more than 4 cpu cores. You will see no advantage from the hexcore but you will also see no disadvantage.
