I'm having a problem with my CD Drive for my Dell Inspiron 1100 that I
got last christmas, it no longer burns CD's and doesn't read DVDR's
anymore either.
It also sometimes won't read CD-RW's
Any ideas why or what I can do?

If it is removeable, remove it and then reseat it. Right-click the
drive in My Computer, Properties, Recording tab, Enable CD Recording
check box, or uncheck the box, reboot, and then re-check the box. Did
you recently install any CD-writing software or virtual CD software? If
so, remove those programs and see it you can then access the drive.
Lastly, boot to Safe Mode, remove the drive, and reboot normally so that
the drive is re-enumerated. Use Safe Mode for removeal to eliminate
active third party driver interference. The next time that the drive is
inaccessible, mount a known good disk (any commercial installation disk
will do) to verify that the problem is not a medium error. FWIW, try
branded CDs/DVDs if using generic media. You can clean the lens
**gently** using a cotton Q-tip dampened in isopropyl alcohol. Check
the disks and clean with soft cloth moistened with water if there are
any fingerprints.

Check the Dell community forum where you can post questions. If defective
and less than a year since purchase, then its likely covered by the
warranty. Fred

What about one of those CD/DVD lense cleaning kits? Will one of those
work?
