Attempting to back up a hard drive due to hardware changes

I recently bought i7 and a new motherboard. As far as I know I need to back up my current hard drive, put the new hardware in, reinstall windows (?) and recover my data. Again, as far as I know...I'm not sure.

I'm currently attempting to back up my hard drive onto another internal hard drive, but when I try to, it says to insert a removable disk to (D). My hard drive is not being recognized as a removable storage device. How do I do this? Assuming I need to.

Please help...I just want my i7 :(

"My hard drive is not being recognized as a removable storage device"

Internal hard drives are not classed as removable storage devices. Such devices are, for example, CD/DVD drives, USB flash drives etc. where the storage media can easily be removed without shutting down the PC.

You didn't say what software you using to back up your hard drive, but it might be one that can only back up to CD/DVD (assuming that D: is your CD/DVD drive).
