Mostly it cannot be done since the graphics card is either integrated
into the mainboard or soldered directly to the mainboard. There have
been exceptions (the Gateway 9100xl comes to mind), theoretically, but
even then the supply of aftermarket replacements was nonexistent.

The Acer's nVidia graphics card with 128MB memory is better than what is
offered by most laptops on the market, although the ATI Mobility Radeon 9800
in the Dell Inspiron 9100 is probably better for 3-D applications. A way to
improve your graphics performance might be to buy an aftermarket solution
which uses the PC card interface to connect an external video card. That
solution is pretty expensive, and the last time I checked, they used PCI
video cards. That arrangement supposedly helps a lot if you have an
integrated graphics chip, but given what you already have, I doubt it would
help you any.

and there I was in comp.sys.laptops browsing on my Acer Aspire 2000 laptop!
Silly me!

Many of the internal components in the 1714smi were designed to be
modular/upgradeable. The video card is one such component. This is the
case on all of the 1710 series laptops (and others). I have the
1712smi, which has an nvidia geforce go5700.
Also, the hard drive is a standard PC hard drive. I replaced mine with
a 250gb drive with no issues.
To answer the original question, it depends on what your current video
card is in the system. You will need to see if that manufacturer (ati
or nvidia) has come out with a newer version.
