My external hard drive suddenly not recognized by my computer.

1. The light is still blinking and i can feel/hear the motor inside is still spinning.
2. Tried uninstalling USB device (even the hidden devices) on Device Manager.
3. It doesn't show up on Disk Management.
4. I tried all USB have available on my computer.
5. My other USB device is working except this.
6. Tried using different USB cable, tried also a shorter one.
7. My PC is also plug directly to a wall socket.
8. I also tried it to plug on my brother's PC and its still not recognized.

I talked to a guy from WD and said that only data recovery is the solution. Now, how to do data recovery?

The external enclosure maybe faulty and are sometimes not the best places to test a drive.

Take the HDD out of the enclosure and plug directly into the main board. See if you can access it then.

I already open the case and it doesn't have one of those typical IDE/SATA connectors and the hard drive is small.

It only has a 2 pin just like where i connect my CPU stock fan and a 12 pin which i have no idea where to connect it.

It looks like this: (http://hddrescue.files.wordpress.com/2011/07/110727_wd1...)

Those are typical 2.5" SATA connectors. Do you have any SATA Power connectors on your power supply or sata data connectors on your motherboard?

Hmmm i dont have a 2.5 connector, probably because i only have a generic power supply. Gonna look and buy some branded PSU when i upgrade my GPU.

@orangenod18, your drive does not have a SATA connector. The 12-pin header provides access to a serial diagnostic console and also connects to LEDs and switches.

Unfortunately the HDD PCB integrates the USB-SATA bridge IC, which means that the drive cannot easily be connected to a SATA port on your PC's motherboard. You would need to hack the hardware:

However, even if you did succeed with the hack, you may find that the data will be encrypted. For example, Passport Essentials models incorporate 128-bit AES hardware encryption.

Go try a free recovery program:

Sometimes, the corrupted drive is not irrevocable. Taking my experience as an example, I had tried this free application to restore my needed files from my corrupted drive. So, it is worth trying.
However, if this free tool does not work out. That’s to say. Your drive is seriously damaged. You'd better take it to a specialist or recovery company. They always have some professional and specific machine to get back your important stuff.

Good luck!

Thank you thank you thank you that I did get my photos back after my external hard disk drive 500GB seagate external not recognized by PC. My Win7 cannot recognize it and I thought I lost my backup photos and other important data. However, thankgodness, your advice saved me hundreds of hours of work and the most important, the photos are my travel photos that I cannot go the same place twice for the photos.

THANK YOU SO MUCH. AND GOOD JOB THIS FORUM DOES.
