Gigabyte mobo will not let me OC 2600k

I just got my build together and when I try to OC using the EasyTune6 installed on my motherboard and it always show it is running at 34 multiplier @ 100 clk. I have tried to change it in the BIOS and get the same thing. Could it be the CUPID program not showing the true speed? Is there another way to get it OC'd and a program that will show the correct CPU speed? Am I supposed to download something else for my Gigabyte mobo?

I have an Intel i7 2600K
Gigabyte Z68XP-UD4
OCZ Vertes 3 SATAiii 120 Gb
WD Black caviar 1 Tb HDD
Sapphire ATI Flex HD 6870 VC
Antec NewTrue 750w PSU
LIghtscribe DVD+/-RWThermaltake Armor A60 case
Thermaltake CLP0575 130mm CPU Cooler that never gets above mid 30's
G-Skill (2 x 4Gb) 2133 ram

And my WEI is 7.8 and Nova bench is 1777. Just seems like it should be faster for over $2000.
My problem is when I up the frequency to around 105 it goes haywire. I can now get the multiplier to 45 without any problems, but I would think it would go higher as temperature is not an issue with the cooler I have and 7 case fans.

Added: above post not there when I typed mine, DO NOT use Blck to OC a sandybridge CPU, only use the cpu multplier, also ignore my reference to Stock HSF - But still must monitor temps with Prime 95. End added

If you use the Easytune utility to overclock, I believe it will still leave the speedstep active, also true for my asrock Z68 Ocing utility.

To see if your OC is working, run a program that loads the cpu and monitor your cpuz. Normally the speed should increas to stock from the 1600. With an OC it should jump up to the OC value. What temps when you do this as prime 95 will cause temps to increase and if you have the stock (Crappy) HSF you could ge hot quickly. Only need to run this for a couple of minutes to verify OC.

To verify the Stability, you need to run for an extended time, ie min 4 -> 8 hrs. But Must monitor temps very closely for the first 30 Minutes!!

Hi again,

Well, you can't do much better than a WEI of 7.8 (only goes to 7.9)

Agree 100% with RetiredChief, use just the multiplier for OCing, not the freq. The Freq changes the base freq for all the components, like RAM and System Agent etc.

Another option in the BIOS is to manually set up the RAM to 1600 or 1866, or even their tested speed of 2133. There you can use XMP, or just choose the frequency directly. Might have to up the RAM voltage slightly to do that, but that's part of OCing.

Here is a good tutorial on Overclocking the SandyBridge, which gives you the basic concepts to follow, not 1,2,3 steps. It is different from the P67 overclocking steps.

Very nice, high end computer!

Well it seems I am getting the most out of what I have along with the RAM @ 2134. I think I have it maxed out until better RAM comes out.
Thanks everyone, Jon

Hi Jon,

If you are running stable RAM at 2133 MHz, that's wonderful. You really can't do any better than that!

1777 is not that bad on Novabench, especially at stock 3.4GHZ. I got my i7 2600k overclocked to 4.6GHZ (but Novabench recognizes it at 4501MHZ) and my GTX 460 1GB OC's from 700mhz to 875mhz and only scored 1837. I was a bit disappointed in the "speed" of the 2600k as well. It seems for me to get the higher scores I have to OC'd not only the CPU but the GPU as well. I have the Gigabyte GA-Z68A-D3H-B3 (rev. 1.0)

Edit -

Your score is this high most likely due to your video card and SSD. Once you OC'd the CPU, you should be in the close to scoring a 1900 if not more on Novabench (add more memory for a bump, too).

I can only push 46 on the multiplier before the system crashes, however, to go further, you have to mess with the voltage. I usually leave this alone. 45 and 46 on the multiplier is good for now. I need to have this system last me for a while, considering how much $$$ I dumped into it.
