Will DVI to VGA adapter work on 4870??

hi
i recently switched to new system that has a vga as well as dvi connector.i will next be adding up my friend's 4870 that has 2 dvi connectors only.so i ordered a dvi to vga adapter.To check it i plugged it into my motherboards dvi connector and connected my vga monitor through it.but monitor simply turns off and the power indicator turns orange(off).
Is there any fault with adapter or dvi to vga dont works?
Will i face same problems with 4870??
please help

Did you have a video card installed at the time that you tested your DVI to VGA adapter? If you did, your on board GPU was disabled and that's why it wasn't working.

No it wasnt connected.the problem i am facing with my onboard graphics.
