AM2+ is a lovely socket that doesn't know what it wants to be.

CPU | Socket

AM2 can obviously run on Am2

AM2 can run on AM2+

AM2+ can obviously run on AM2+

AM2+ can run on AM2

AM3 can run on AM2

Am3 can run on am2+

AM3 can obviously run on AM3

What you cant do though is have AM2 and AM2+ cpu running on AM3 and the upcoming am3+ socket due to these cpu's dont have a ddr3 memory controller. (AM3 cpu's have both ddr3 and ddr2 memory controller.)

Now, When you factor in the upcomming AM3+ (or AM3r2) from the info i know of ( which can still change and my or may not be correct)

You can run AM3 cpu's on a AM3+ motherboard but from what i heard, AM3+ cpu's will not be able to run on the AM3, AM2+, And AM2 sockets in order to bring out the full performance of AMD upcoming cpu's.

Now, other factor include if the motherboard supports these kind of multi cpu support. Some dont. Some dont support to all cpus due to reasons like what malmental siad, not able to hand certain cpu wattage use, certain features, ect.

Hope this helps clear things up.

incorrect..

Actually thats correct. AM3 can run on AM2 ;)

http://www.gigabyte.us/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3...

To prove that it is an AM2 socket on this MB, you can use newegg's images and zoom in on the socket. All Amd sockets have on them (not on the motherboard but socket it's self) "Socket AM#" whether that would be AM2, AM2+, or AM3.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ImageGallery.aspx?CurImag...

On this motherboard, it reads Socket Am2. ;)  (just be sure to look at a top view of the motherboard and be read to read upside down.)

Strike that, for some reason i though it's shows AM2+ on them as well. I've only been seening AM2 and AM3. I've could have sworn that i seen Am2+ on those before. :heink:  Although the info is still valid that AM3cpu and run on Am2 sockets.

that's an AM2+ board, that's why it can run all three..
A DESIGNATED AM2 BOARD ONLY will not run AM3 and a AM3 chip will not run on designated AM2.
NOT TALKING ABOUT AM2+..

and warmon6 you have a silver badge too... come on son..! (Ed Lover reference...) lol

:pfff:

i used to say Am3 couldn't run Am2 as well, but randomizer over a year ago correct me on that. (Mainly due to that i had the intel mind set of a cpu made on a paticular socket could only be run on that socket. Thats when i was out of the AMD loop for a very long time)

Here are other users saying the same thing that's also highly knowledgeable,

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/269218-28-mobo

alyoshka for example has done the think her self. On a motherboard released before AM2+ came around.

Now come on guys & gals
I told you I Installed the AM3 X4 620 on my M2NSLI32 Delux .....lol
All synthetic bench markers refused to show the other two cores..... forget calculating with them.....
I'll try and send the CPUz for both the processors on the same board here....

Heres with the 4400+
http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=657250

Heres with the X4 620
http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=791053

And that is on the Mobo with the latest Bios offered by Asus which enables the a few more processors on that specific board...

As a review for alyoshka board shows dates all the way back to 2006. Same year as Am2 came out. It wasn't until 2007 when Am2+ came out.

BTW.... Haven't you learn a badge and ranks means nothing really?

There been plenty of users who are/were "addict" and "silver badge" that actted as a loony, fanboy, ect. :p  Making them not as trust worthy as they should be.

AM3 will not run on AM2 boards...
the AM2 boards are not strong enough.... only AM2+ will work on AM2 and that depends on the actual motherboard itself..!
someone actually show me otherwise...

My Asus M2NPV-VM is an AM2 board, definitely not AM2+. It recently received a BIOS update that added support for all AM3 CPU's up to the PII 945.

QED.

beta BIOS I believe, might be wrong, not really my board so I do not exactly know, I do have two Asus motherboards but not this model..
I would like to know more about allowing a AM2 board allowing AM3 chips;
it has to be board specific, has to be..
In any case I will stand up and if I'm wrong and admit it.. :sol:

Thats ok, we have to learn things this way sometimes. ;)  It's happen to me on more than one occasion. (still remember one time i thought cpu's determined if you have sli or not and not the motherboard. Although i wasn't thinking straight that day.  )
