Whenever I try to open "My Computer" the flashlight appears and it takes
exactly two minutes each time to show the contents of My Computer. Once
there, I can open folders below fine. However, when I go back up to My
Computer, it again takes two minutes to open.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

It seems that the problem appeared about the time I upgraded to Service Pack
2.

Thank you. When I stopped it, there was no improvement. However, when I
disabled it after right clicking and choosing "properties," my problem was
solved.

However, what does that portend for my scanner that's attached to this
computer?

And is this related to another problem I have?: Often My Computer doesn't
recognize one of my CD drives or removable storage devices.

These problems came up after the upgrade to Service Pack 2 a couple of
months ago. The only way I could get Service Pack 2 to work right was to
disable "Shell Hardware Detection" service. Otherwise, once I clicked on
the Start button, the computer would freeze for a couple of minutes. Then
when I clicked on one of the icons in the start menu or "Programs," it would
freeze again.

It was suggested I remove services until I found the offending service. But
is having that service disabled causing the problems of not recognizing some
drives? I've also had problems installing a printer.

Shell HW Detection is need for AutoPlay functionality and I don't know how
disabling this service affects the visibility of the CD drive in My
Computer. Have you checked the Device Manager for any error codes for the CD
drive?
