Fan/heatsink compatability

Can the fan and heatsink combo from an Athlon 64 x2 fit on an Athlon 2 x2? I am looking to buy an oem Athlon 2x2 to replace the Athlon 64.

Hello, and welcome to the Forum.

First off,

Is your motherboard compatible with the new AX2? If not, get a new motherboard. They are not very cheap. If it is a prefabricated computer,( like a dell or an HP), you may have a hard time. if it is a self fabricated build, contact the motherboard manufacturer and see if the CPU is compatible and the BIOS can register the CPU.

Thanks for the reply. I am getting a new motherboard and would like to use an OEM chip. To save on cost I would like to re-use the fan and heat sink for the OEM chip. I am unsure if the fan/heatsink will fit on the Athlon 2 x2 chip. Any more advice would be helpful.

Well, I believe as long as it remains a AM2+/AM3 CPU socket...you should be fine.
