It depends if you want to completely rebuild it because $500 can get you a good enough gaming PC... You can get an i5 2500k and a $80 Z68 MoBo and a $100 GPU than a $40 500w PSU and $40 RAM and a $20 Optical Drive...

Ya i guess in the long haul it would be a lot easier just to do that then try to redo the dell.

best if you rebuild it because your comp is pretty old...

It's best if you start with the old comp because there's some stuff you can use like the mid tower and RAM? Those system spec isn't good for anything these days, my i7-950 can barely do stuff(Being nearly able to do high end games like BF2)

ya only the tower would be of any use. i opened it up to look at the RAM only 512mb sadly, but i imagine i could also use the PSU since im just making him more of a media and internet comp

You need help finding components? For starters or for internet use and stuff similar, start with these...
$140 i3-2120(Performs almost the same as First Gen quad cores like C2Q Q9550)
$80-100 Z68 MoBo(Dont need expensive MoBo when you ain't OverClocking or playing high end games)
$20-30 2x2GB RAM(2GB of RAM is enough for multi-tasking)
$30 250gb 3gb/s 8mb cache(250GB should be enough and will last few years B4 200GB is used if you browse and play little games like WC3)
$20 Optical Drive(Dont really need one but to install windows, Everything is mainly portable to USB but cant install windows from USB)
$60 VideoCard(You can get a GT9800 for about $60 with 512MB)

Im really liking that set up.. and i wont be breaking the bank..i really only need the CPU, MoBo, RAM. So roughly about a $250-$300 build i think he'll like it for what he is going to use it for.

thanks for the help

Also, buy your stuff rom PriceWatch.COM.. It sometimes gives some cheaper price than other stores...
