Probably going to be building a new machine on a budget to play games (aion being the most intensive of the games I play). Would be best if I could stick to one of the first 2 processors for the build because of costs.

My question is basically that assuming no cores unlock, how much of a difference would I notice between the 555 or 445 and the 955 for gaming? And if I can at least get 1 core out of the 555 to make it a 3-core it would outperform the 445 because of the l3 cache correct? It is kind of appealing anyway since it's a BE.

I'd go for the 445 out of those two,
955 would be nice but would your games use all the four cores?
and dont buy a chip hoping to unlock, if it unlocks your happy, if it doesn't your bitter that you've somehow lost out

Yeah I don't think they can even use all 4 cores, which is why I liked the idea of the 555 since it was a BE and would be easier for me to OC higher than the 445.

I have two x3 435's in my house and they both unlocked successfully,
but the other half and I play Wow, and they were great chips even as triples for that, I'd still say the triple as you dont need to clock it, but you do have the option,

I'm not sure about AION, but I would take the Athlon II X3 over the Phenom II X2. My reasoning for this is the 3rd core adds a lot more performance than L3 cache when you've got a game/application that can use all 3 cores.

Too bad that you missed out on the OEM 3.0 Ghz AM3 Phenom II X3 740 BE on sale here ($68.99) on the 26th and 27th if you lived either in Canada or the USA.It was completely sold out.Maybe they will have a sale again. Here are the Passmark Scores for this CPU.

A pretty high rating performer.

Here is it's value (performance vs price). On the top of the list (If one got it on that sale)
