well it depends on the amps you have on the power supply...look for power supplys in the 500 watt range with at least 40+ amps on a single rail...single rail power supplys are better thats what i hear people say...
i have a hd 5850 gpu and i have a corsair 650watt power supply at 52 amps on one rail 80 plus certified...
what power supply u have?...then we can help you out

The 5830 actually uses more power, but its not a lot more.

I don't remember enough about CM PSUs to know if thats a good or bad one. Try looking for a review of that unit from either Jonnyguru or HardOCP.

It delivers 500w but has issues doing it like noise and ripple problems.
It also falls to 73% efficiency when doing so.
It's not a terrible psu but far from ideal.
I would have concerns and consider replacing it with one of these.

Guys, the ATX power-supply spec states that no 12V rail shall carry more than 20A.
Therefore you require 2 x 12V rails for 40A, and 3 x 12V rails for 60A, etc.
You are comparing HD5850 vs. HD5830 in your title...
But seem to have forgotten about the 5830 in the body of your post?
And who is the dude who believes a 5830 uses more power than a 5850!? LoL, heheh...
I really like the HD5770 vidcard.
The HD5850 is a little bit rich right now... but maybe (if you're a gamer).
There is no way I would want a HD5830 though - rather have a 5770!
The HD5770 is also the maximum vidcard you would want with ~500W PSU.

Well he is probably basing that on the Official ATI specifications for the card which show the MAX power usage of the 5830 being 24W higher than the 5850 !!

while in actual performance the 5830 does seem to use less power the specs do show it using more so pretty easy to see how someone could be confused - and at Idle the 5830 does in fact use more power than the 5850 at idle due to it being based on the 5870 PCB !!

Note : the above graphs the power usage difference of the system using its Onboard video chipset vs. the power usage using the listed card -- so gives a good representation of the power used just by the video card !!

Thank you JDFan.

So The_OGS, your saying Corsair makes "bad" PSUs? They only make single rail PSUs that I know of. You should go read those ATX specs again.
