Can someone give me a ideal on how big of a power supply i'll need for the below system ? I was hoping to reuse my 600W emermax.

GIGABYTE GV-N470OC-13I GeForce GTX 470
GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD3R
Intel Core i7-950
CORSAIR XMS3 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 ST31000528AS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5
blu-ray sata drive
dvd-rw sata drive

I was thinking of upgrading to 12GB of ram, and adding a 2nd drive for raid 0

By my calculations, 635 Watts on 100% full load for system + 2 USB devices attached and 10% capacitor degredation. (added these in for real world use on the modifiers).

-This is also with the upgrades added-

So, as an answer, no you would want 700 Watts, especially if you intend to OC. Thats my reccomendation for headroom anyway.

yes you will be totally fine. but why 12gb ram (very useless)...lol enermax makes a good psu so 600w is plenty

At dip, try using a Powersupply calculator.

I used the antec one and that system with real world perfomance in mind will draw just above 600watts.

EDIT++++

here is the link to the calc, assuming his old PSU is 6months + old, and that he will be using USB power from PC, and that he has a Standard gaming case.

Do the calcs for yourself. you will see.

capactior aging is bs, so dont select any of that. the 600w enermax WILL BE FINE.
END OF DISCUSSION...

You know it's not total BS, just not the big scary that some would have people believe.

I always calculate on worst case scenario to leave headroom for improvement. If you guys beleive thats fine, then kay, however I wouldnt do it.

its not going to lower a psu capactiry by 10% a year. or else a dell 200w psu from 6 years ago woulnt still work...

hp and dell and all the other big companies do it...and they sell billions of copmuters. they use like 250w when here everyone would recommend a 350w for the same computer, and hp, dell, etc, dont even use high quality psus (average but not like a corsair), and those computers usually last a while...

i would be comfortable using that 600w on quite a bit more than what hes running it on. i understand where youre coming from and sorry if i was sounding like/acting like i knew everything, im just a little...touchy :)

Free forums, free advice. Im not a newcomer to the PC trade.

And no, I wont keep my worst case scenario to myself.

Jesus christ...something is wrong with you. Its not your place to say wether my advice is bad. Thats the choice of the OP. All im trying to do is avoid any complications, Shovenose seemed to understand. You however seem to be so self opinionated you cant even see where im coming from.

calm down! he is just trying to give advice. yes, its different from others advice, and frankly, its incorrect, but no need to get pissed off or report it. he did nothing wrong.

you are the one who should be reported. but i know both me and dead are too nice to do that

Keep in mind when you buy your power supply, If you plan to upgrade in the future or not . If your do SLI for your 470 that will draw a lot more power then just the one card.

600W Enermax is totally fine. If I was buying one now maybe I wouldnt buy 600..

but 600 is plenty. that system with a max stress test wont even break 600.
