PCIe x16 and PCIe X16 v2.0

I heard it was possible to put a PCIe x16 v2.0 card in a normal PCIe x16 slot. Is this true or just BS? If it is possible I could really upgrade my graphics card

  1. More info: I currently have a Radeon X1550. What's the best affordable card I could upgrade to?
  2. yes this is true, been running a 4850 on a pci express 1.0 slot for some time now, it basically runs as if it is a x8 pci 2.0 so half the speed. As long as you get something slower than a 5870 ish i dont think 1.0 vs 2.0 makes any differences.

also need power supply info to be able to tell you the best affordable card you can get, and your budget.
  3. amirp has it, and even the 5870 can be run without too much slow down (< 4% loss), it's the dual gpu cards like the 5970 that would have a problem with that reduction in bandwidth
