TRYING TO READ DATA FROM A SATA DRIVE

Hello,
I'm trying to copy the data from a laptop hard drive onto another computer using a VAnted SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 adapter. I donot see the laptop drive on My Computer, although the computer recognizes an external USB device. I've done this successfully with E drives, but this is the first time I'm trying to read a SATA drive. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It might be the sequence of connecting the drive. My adapter requires to connect the usb first, plug the power cable to the drive and then plug the sata in.
