SMART BAD error in hardisk

Hello,
I wanted to take the back up of my harddisk so when connected to my friend's computer my harddisk 500GB seagate was showing error of S.M.A.R.T. BAD error.
what is the status of the harddisk??
can it be repaired or if it cannot be repaired then can i recover the data of that disk???
when connected to my friend's system it is not booting properly to copy the data.
please help me

Generally they cannot be repaired, Just copy all your data off it

I tried connecting the harddisk to my friend's system to copy data but when i connect his system not booting properly then how to copy it??

The drive is dead or dying. Try connecting not as the boot drive, but another drive. If you're luck you may get data off of it. Either way, replace it, or RMA if under warranty. And if you're wondering about data recovery, be prepared for $1000, so consider the value of the data.
