You can get the GTX 470 for 330$ or the 5850 for 290$.The NVIDIA card will be performing better(in terms of minimum and average fps) in most games and will be quite capable of handling the latest DX 11 games better than the 5850.

The best value for the money right now is SLIed GTX 460s. They come close to an HD5970 but cost $200 less.

Yes, if you consider single GPU then go for a GTX 470, if not the SLIed GTX 460 1GBs offer the best value for money at the moment.

If you are going to SLI(or would like to at some point) I would recommend the 1gb version of the card. Of the versions I'm seeing in stock I would get this;
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
The card can OC a good 30-35% usually. You may want to just get one, OC it and decide if you even feel the need for another. When/if you do get a second it tends to scale very well.
