I question which laptop would be best for a solider overseas. Main use would
be downloading pictures from digital camera and making CD's, watching DVD's,
battery life, and exchanging emails. After looking at numerous ones they all
seem close other than price. But, how about being durable. There are some
that are built to handled very roughly but cost three times as much. My
thoughts are to buy a more reasonable priced (cheap) one with a good
carrying case such as the Pelican with the idea if something happens to buy
another. Any comments would be very helpful. Thanks in advance. Terry

Get a Toshiba with 3 year factory warranty and a huge hdd. It really
hurts those guys to have to delete music and games they get from
trading.

Recommend Dell 1150 or similar.. even their lower end laptops from $700
have excellent battery life and reliable... for Ruggedness (i.e. sand)
might want to look in to Panasonic or Samsung rough books.

Definitely get a three year warranty, and perhaps physical damage. If a
drop breaks the screen or whatever, you'll be glad.

You left out price, and that's a big omission. That aside, right above me
was a Toshiba recommendation. They make good computers and good support. I
don't know about support out of the country. Dell has discounts for
military folks, and a special warranty for world wide repairs and support.
I use a modest IBM, and there is definitely worldwide support and repair.

A big hard disk is nice, but I use a USB external with a modest 40g HD. I'd
rather have a 7200 rpm 40 or 60 gig HD over the 5400 80 gig. So size
doesn't matter. I recommend lots of RAM, and 512 meg is the entry point
with 1 gig really encouraged.

....

Also, make sure your hard drive is encrypted, you don't want to be made a
scapegoat like Lynndie England. Take pictures, but be careful.

A CD burner would solve that problem.

Takes a big stack of CDs to hold as much music as one disk.
