Technically speaking, it's impossible for four way SLI for GTX 480s, and four HD 5970s wouldn't work... only two as it is four GPUs in total and that's all the drivers are programmed to handle. Four GTX 480s should be faster than two HD 5970s in most games, as SLI scales better than CrossFireX, which is logical seeing four GTX 480s cost $2000 while two HD 5970s cost $1400.

ATi may release the HD 6000 series possibly later this year, or early next year. ATi are apparently going to refresh their current HD 5000 lines by the end of the year.

No AMD motherboard can handle 4 GTX 480s, let alone 4 HD 5970s in Crossfire:o

Rumors of ATI 6xxx series is by Q4 this year.

Rumors also state it is more of a refresh of the 5xxx series with not much increase in performance. At least not like the jump from the 4xxx to 5xxx series.

Lastly, the 5970 is part of the 5xxx series.

Why is it technically impossible? Or are you just referring to the AMD bit?

^Yes, at present only an EVGA X58 motherboard(I just don't remember which one) will support 4 way SLI with EVGA GTX 480s , if I'm not mistaken.

Sorry mouse, I meant it wasn't possible on an AM3 platform. Three way SLI works on one AM3 platform that I know of though.

Tamz, I believe there are two, the EVGA X58 4-Way SLI Classified & EVGA Classified SR-2.

The one Guru3D used was an ASUS Rampage III Extreme Motherboard eVGA X58 4-way SLI Classified, so now you know of two! ;)

^ Yeah... Unfortunately the R3E doesn't come with dual NF200 chips, although Asus does sell the ROG Xpander daughter board which plugs into the PCI-E x16 slots and allows four way SLI.

I was about to notify mousemonkey about it, but he corrected his post before I could tell him.

It's been a long old night for me so far and it doesn't look like ending soon. :(
