ADDITIONAL COMMENTS:

Hi. As suggested above, I'm looking for a desktop that'll cost me approximately 1200 CAD, excluding monitor, and keyboard & mouse. As a laptop user for the last four years, it took me probably a month to decide on the two systems I've designed below, and I'd appreciate any comments on these parts as well as improvements on pricing. I know that Sandy Bridge or Bulldozer is coming out; however, even if they do, I will not have enough money to buy the new platforms/CPU, and I don't think I'd want to wait for the current CPU's prices to go down. Without further ado, here they are:

I've been hoping to build for "longetivity" if theres such a thing, but I will not be replacing this computer for 3-4 years, at which time, I'll need a new laptop anyways, for further studies in school.

Thanks in advance!

looks like both systems are similar except for cpu&MB. I think it's really up to you whether you prefer AMD or Intel. But if I were you, I'd get a Corsair 650w and Corsair memory(cheaper than gskill, i suppose), and with the extra money, go for an i7/X58

If you planning on getting a second 5850 in the future, I believe i7/X58 build will benefit you more, but that being the case, you might want to stick with the 750w PSU

Can you not add a second 5850 to a i5 platform? or the AMD platform? Or would I be better off buying a GTX 460 and add a second one in the future?

I believe what 175422561 is referring to is the 3-4% (potential) loss due to CrossFire/SLI with 8x/8x lanes on an 1156 or 890GX motherboard. From everything I have seen, it's not worth worrying about, unless you're planning on CrossFiring 2x 5970.

You could go with a 460 on the i5 build, but you wouldn't be able to SLI a 460 with your current AMD motherboard.

I'm not sure there's much difference for gaming going with a 1090T vs. a Phenom II X4 955, and there should be something like $150 in savings. Or you could go with the 955 and use the savings to get a 40-60 GB SSD.

You might also look at switching to CL7 RAM, though the performance improvement is likely to be less than 1-2%. If it's not significantly more expensive though, you might as well.

All in all, both builds look good. You might consider the Asus P7P55D-E Pro for USB 3.0 & SATA 6.0 Gb/s support if you choose to go with the Intel build.
