Gaming Rig on a Budget

Ok, so I have never attempted to build a computer. However, I have heard through reading articles on the internet if you can figure it out it saves ALOT of money and you get a overall better system. So, I am on a mission to build my own gaming rig, and it does not have to be hardcore by any means. Perferably I just want to run the Sims 3 and World of Warcraft flawlessly! I do not have a set budget really, currently waiting for my financial aid check from school to come in so I know how much I have to work with. Can somebody shoot me some ideas though? What is cheap but very efficient?
