i'm thinking of putting together a new machine .. its gonna be mini-itx based so i'm not going to be able to do SLI or CrossFire so I would like the single fastest board I can get which as far as I know these days is the 5970. My question is, do all of them sound like jet engines or are some quieter then others. I'm not asking while the gpu is being stressed but rather while its sitting idle at a windows desktop with some web browsing 'n such

More about : quiet 5970

As an owner for 5970 i have to say its much more quieter than my 4870X2 and its overall a quiet card(regarding its performance),you can barely hear the fan running when in idle mode.

Can't you get a bigger case?
You will have a bad airflow inside the smaller case...

Th 5970 is 12 inches long.I doubt that it will fit in a mini-itx case.

There are few mini-itx cases that support a 5970 like Silverstone SUGO SG07,but i agree with posters above,it may not fit in other cases, so make sure it has enough room.

i'm specifically looking to get the SG07 .. its specifically designed from the ground up to be able to house such a big and thermally hot card such as the 5970

i personally do consider the 5970 overly noisy, its tolerable, but definitely noticeable,
compared to my 5770, however, it's not as noisy as the X1800XL i had a few years ago :-)

why not 5870, it may not be the best on the market, but for 1080P and under it should do fine and more than likely be a bit more quiet

utlimately i might end up going that way .. only cause of the price vs performance .. but we'll see .. prolly won't be building for another 2-3 weeks .. just was curious about the noise level and if any specific vendor's card is quieter then others

Well its not fair to compare a 5970 with a 5770,its comparable to a Crossfire setup of 5850's, and one 5970 is more quiet than 2 5850,so IMO its considered as a quite card regarding its performance
