I have MB with a sis 661 fx chip set with memory problem

My board has 2 memory sockets and they can use up to 1gb each. But when I try to use both sockets with 512mg in each, I get a blue screen failure for some reason. It may run ok for 1 or 2 hours or even 5 or 6 hours.
When I drop back to 1 socket with just 512 mg, it doesn't matter which socket I put the 512 mg in it runs ok.

The Board is an ASUS P4S800-MX with a SiS 661 FX chip set and a 478 socket. I am using a P4 2.6 gh 800 gh fsb and two sticks of Elixir PC3200 512 DDR 400 low density memory. I am also using the onboard video and sound and have updated all the drivers. The OS is XP sp3.

Can anyone suggest what might be wrong, I have this setup for around 4 years without any problems until the past few weeks.

Thanks,

Sounds like you just diagnosed a bad stick of ram. Good job.

It doesn't seem to matter which stick of memory I use, it still only works with one stick of 512 memory.

So your saying both sticks of memory work fine if used alone?

Maybe you should have mentioned that in your post. Did you have 512 and try to add another 512, or did you have 2-512's from the start and just start having trouble with one of them? You have to give us some information in order to help you, I cannot read minds.

Do they both work by themselves in different slots, or do both work fine in only one slot but not the other?
