Hi all and a happy new year,

my girlfriend wants to buy a new digicam, better and more advanced than the
old P71 she currently has. She usually just points and shoots, and she wants
a broad zoom range. Her primsry concern is the small size. She is thinking
of either C770 UZ or the S1 IS. Are there any comments on these two or any
other suggestions?

thanks a lot

may be you can add the Panasonic FZ3 to the list (compact, light, very
powerful zoom, 12x, image stabilization)

I had the Oly-750UZ. While its a nice camera but the 10x zoom is
usually a waste without Image Stabilization. I would consider one of
the IS cameras - Canon S1 IS, Panasonic FZ3 or FZ20. Buying a 10x zoom
without IS is like paying for a crippled feature.

As you mention small size, consider if you REALLY need that 10x-12x
zoom? Maybe you can trade-off that extra zoom for some extra MP or
other features.

The only non-IS drawback with a 750 or 770 is that it's best to get an
external flash for indoor work using bounce mode. They are not great at
autofocusing in low light either but I don't think the S1 is much better.
The Olympus cameras have a useful 'My Mode' setting that I have set to
hyperfocal distance in manual focus, f4 wideangle for indoor flash work, it
then becomes a 'snap happy' camera for indoor work with people shots where
they won't keep still (like kids) and I don't have to worry if the shot's
going to be in focus. I've never seen any camera shake on any pictures
I've taken outdoors in daylight on a 750, even shots I've taken one handed
sat astride a bike in a strong wind have come out sharp. Picture quality is
half a league above the Canon S1 IMO.

I declare you a human tripod ;-)

As far as I can remember, I just managed to get one sharp shot at 10x
zoom in daylight :)

Yep, low-light focus on the Oly-750 is a pain. Canon's A-series have a
low-light assist lamp but strangely its missing on the Canon S1 IS.

What gave me joy is the macro pics I took with the Oly-750. I managed
to get close enough to a butterfly and got this:

View it at 100% and the detail is really nice.

I'll change my name then ;-)
I only give up with handheld non-flash shots when slower than 1/20sec, then
the flash gets used or I don't bother taking shots outdoors. The 750 can
usually focus OK in low light down to below this speed anyway, also x10
zoom isn't that useful indoors, x3 or so is usually plenty I find, so shake
problems diminish.

The Panasonics look good but are a bit bigger than the Oly's. Give it
another year and perhaps all the good points of the Oly 7xx, Canon S1, Pan
FZxx etc cameras will be found in one camera.

I'm not sure how they compare for size, but I just picked up a Fuji
S5100 as a companion to my S2 Pro. It can be used as a P&S or you can
use it as a totally manual camera. You can read a review on Steve's
digicams.

Thanks guys for the answers, you've been very helpful. Remember, this is my
girlfriend we're talking about, I can carry her and my SLR in my back, while
she cannot carry my SLR alone, so size matters in this case... If it was up
to me, I wouldn't get any point and shoot camera with an ultra zoom. I put
all my money on good primes for my film SLR. But her needs are different.
She wants to have a small carry around camera that does everything. I
settled down to these two, as they have good features and are much smaller
than Fuji s5000/7000, kyocera, minolta etc which I like in this zoom range
and the 5xxx and 8xxx families of Olympus and Nikon that I really like for
myself. Now, with both she can go towards manual whenever she wants. Canon
has IS, which is good to have, but has less mpx than the Oly, although I do
not know - nor can find - information on the actual ccd area of these two.
The ain advantage of the oly for her is that it is smaller and more good
looking ;-)
