Bootable DVR hard drives and RAID 1

I have a general question regarding bootable hard drives and RAID 1.

I have a Moxi DVR that boots in a similar manner like a computer, and I suspect that the OS is based on some version of LINUX, but I can't say for sure. I know that it isn't based on any version of Windows. Anyway, the Moxi unit has two SATA ports; one for an internal SATA drive (the boot drive), and another for an external eSATA drive. As I mentioned, the internal drive is the boot, but that same drive also stores recorded TV shows. The external port is for hooking up an external hard drive to be used as additional TV storage space.

I found out there are a few people that have purchased two-bay RAID enclosures and configured them to RAID 1. They have hooked them up to be used as the external storage. However, there are some that have also purchased an additional two-bay RAID enclosure and configured them to RAID 1. They can boot up from those RAID units. I guess that I should say the reason that some people are using the RAID is to not only have a backup to reduce the chances of losing their shows, but primarily for their primary (boot up) drive. You see, the primary drive can record 3 separate channels at the same time, and when it isn't recording your favorite shows, it is continuously recording the current channel 24/7/365, so the primary drive always has a HIGH failure rate. If the primary drive fails, not only can you not boot the system, but you have lost ALL of the shows on that drive. The secondary external drive has a much lower failure rate because that drive isn't being recorded to all of the time. One more thing, there is no setting on the Moxi to designate that all recordings be sent to the external secondary drive. About one fifth of all recorded shows are sent to the external secondary drive.

I hope that I have given enough background information for my question, excluding why I haven't asked my questions to the other people that are using RAID devices on their Moxi units.

Here are my questions. Since the Moxi doesn't require a BIOS setting or anything for RAID, In your expert opinion, should I be able to pull an existing bootable hard drive from this unit, and place it directly into a RAID enclosure, set to RAID 1, and then boot it back up without much concern without having to re-install the operating system again, and also losing the shows? I realize there are gambles and other unknowns, but I thought that since there wasn't any Moxi drive settings, that I might be able to place the bootable drive into the enclosure, boot it up, and then put in the second (blank) drive into this RAID 1 system. This way if one drive fails, there will be the other drive that is working, and I can keep replacing any failed drives with another one.
