Case Suggestions

I need a good quality mid-tower case with 120MM front fan(s) and a front USB/firewire. It seems that all of the good cases now have the I/O on the top rather than the front. But, top access won't work for me, due to the desk that I keep my computer in. I have a Lian Li right now, which I really like. But, they don't have any front USB/Firewire for the new ones. Does anyone have any suggestions?

    yeah, whats your budget?

    Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

EDIT - beaten to it by ct1615

Rosewill TU-155 II 500 Black ATX case $90

    COOLER MASTER Centurion 534 $70

    including shipping
  2. This is good info! Some of these say that they have "front" I/O ports. But, they are actually on the top (near the front). Unfortunately, I can't fit plugs into the top in my desk. But, I'll search these links. What does everyone think about the quality between these manufacturers?

    Silverstone, Antec, NZXT, Coolermaster?

I don't mind spending $200 on the case. But, I want to make sure that the airflow is good and the vibration/noice is minimal. I have really liked the Lian Li that I have now. Thanks!

    Antec P193 Gunmetal Gray - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129062

EDIT - note only a handful of cases fit the description of good build quality, good ventialtion/cooling and the firewire frontpanel ports. All the new cases have the above features but the firewire has been replaced by the eSATA port...as ct1615 mentioned

they are all fine. I believe the cooler master centurion has a firewire port, if you like your lian li get the PCB-7, i linked one of the models above but I they have several with mesh, close covers, window, etc., Cases at equal price points are mostly about looks anyway so you can be more vain when it comes to choosing one rather then most PC hardware like a video cards, ram, or PSU.

Congrats, please watch the System Builder Marathon as well because THIS builder has a STRONG preference for mid-towers with front-panel ports.

I'm going to take this to the next level:

1.) Hardly anyone in here needs a full tower, if they say they do they're probably lying
2.) Cases need to sit on desks. If you put yours on the floor to gather dust and hair, you're abusing it.
3.) Cases that sit on desks need ports on the front. If they're on top, you cannot reach them easily. If they're near the top of the front, the cables dangle in front of your drives which is also pretty pathetic.

In summary, CASES WITH TOP-PANEL PORTS ARE JUNK no matter how nice they look. I often find myself forced to build with this junk because junk is popular with the clueless. There is some very fine garbage on the market, with excellent materials and craftsmanship that's ruined only by horrible front-panel-port placement.
  6. I agree completely. I don't know why the case manufactuers are going to top ports for the new cases. In light of the input above, I decided (after much searching) to go with the following:

Case - LIAN LI PC-7BYCF Black (front ports, large fans)
with NZXT Sentry-2 5.25" Touch Screen fan controller (to control the speed on the large side fan & top fan)
and BYTECC UH-430 Super-Speed USB 3.0 4-ports Internal 3.5" Bay HUB (for 3.0 front panel access)
Motherboard - Asus P7P55D-E PRO (for SLI & 3.0 USB)
    Processor - Intel Core i5-760 Lynnfield 2.8GHz LGA 1156
Video Cards - EGVA GTX 460 768MB in SLI

My only concern with any of this is the potential conflict between the video cards and the hard drivemounts. But, As I recall my current case had the same condition and fit, althopugh it was pretty close. I am passing my old system off to my son and can't save any of the current parts. So, all of this is new.

Thanks to everyone for their advice!
