Why are Some i7 Chips More than the others?

what im saying is, why is lower number i7's more than higher number i7's? Why does the i7 940 cost $250 more than the 950? Shouldnt they be in order of power and price? So the 950 should cost more? Another exmple, the i7 975 costs the same as the 980x??

940 was replaced by 950, and the 975 and 980 are both extreme chips which some places are selling 975's at lower prices and thr 940's I haven't seen for a while.

and some of the chips are the same price but lower performance, like it doesnt make much sense

That's because the 940 is old and discontinued. When the 940 launched, it was $500 or so, and that was before the 950 was available. Then the 950 launched, again around $500 or so. Then the 960 launched, the 950 dropped in price to its current $300 or so, and the 960 took over in the $500 range. The 940 has been long since gone, so they never bothered to drop the price.

As for the 930 and 950, the 930 launched when the 950 was still $500.

As I said, it was when it launched. The 960 has taken its place.
