How to reduce active time of external hdd

hi,
My name is Uttkarsh. I have an external Hdd of 500gb . It becomes very slow while copying files from any of my lappy .
The task manager always shows active time as 100% while copying the files and it some time stops copying files as well. Wanna reduce the active time of my HDD so could anyone please help me with that . If you want I can provide You with the screen shot of it as well .

How long have you had the drive? You may need to copy your files to another drive and reformat it. Please post a screen shot.
