I am looking for an non-dedicated hot shoe flash for the Nikon 5700. I need
a guide number around 100 give or take. It needs to have bounce capability,
while zoon is not as important. Variable power would be an asset. Can
anyone suggest an Sunpak, Vivitar etc. which would be compatable with a
Nikon digital 5700? Thanks for any help!

Go for a Vivitar 283 if you can find one.

I use a Vivitar 730AFNi - works really well. Be sure to get the Nikon
SC-28 cable as the hotshoe adapter connecting wire won't interfere
with the 5700 pop-up flash that has to pop up to control the external
flash. I am pleased with the combination. I had to drill out a hole
in my bracket to screw the SC-28 shoe on the bracket - bought an
adapter tripod screw to attach it with - small job - no problem.

Sunpak 444d or 433d are dedicated, but you can get a "generic" module for
it that makes it non-dedicated. It has GN 120, bounce and swivel, and
variable power down to 1/16. The 444 has a zoom lens (removable) with a
bounce card.
I've been using this model, and similar flashes with the same body, since
the 80s. They're not as rugged as Vivitar, but more flexible.

The Sunpak 383 is a non-dedicated flash with variable power and a bounce/swivel head.
Available from BH photo for around US $70. I don't know about the compatibility with
your camera but it will probably work.

They've made several over the years with the same interchangable foot
that I've owned. I thougth my previous one was a 433, but now that you
mention it, maybe it had a shorter number, like 36...
I've owned about 4 of them over the years. They work fantastic, until I
drop them.
