Hello, I have just started a IT course and wish to buy another computer, I've been told that even if I purchase a 6gb computer that runs 32 bit it will only use 3gb, is this correct ?
I've been told that I will need a 64gb to actually make use of the 6gb

kind regards
craig

There is no such thing as a 6gb computer. You can however install 6gb of ram INTO a computer.

Yes you must have a 64bit (not 64gb) OS to use more than 3gb of ram.

But why on Earth would you buy a computer with a 32bit OS anyways???

LGA 1366 e.g. X58 6-DIMM 3x2GB = 6GB :)

It's true the max for 32-bit {x86} OS is 4GB {3.0~3.5GB Usable} and 64-bit {x64} for anything more. Also, certain 64-bit OS are limited to LESS than the 64-bit allows; Windows see -> http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/li [...] s.85).aspx

:heink: + :kaola: aside - I know what the OP meant.

The only time a Tri-Channel 'Set' of RAM makes since is on a LGA 1366 MOBO. Otherwise, for the rest it is best suited to use Dual-Channel 2X__GB or 4__GB set(s).

For your information you can still run 6gb of ram in dual channel.

The only way to 6GB Dual Channel is 2x1GB + 2x2GB - more an oddity than a probability. 1/1000+ are 2x1GB + 2x2GB.

I'm good at math.

edit: LOGIC "wish to buy another computer, I've been told that even if I purchase a 6gb" it's NOT a leap to think 3x2GB.

Your good. Lots of pre-builts come that way, so it's not an oddity at all, but quite common, which is exactly what the op is talking about, a pre-built.

Dell, Gateway, HP, etc - will 'bastardize' but {typically} not by default. The PRE-BUILT with >4GB ALL, 100%, ZERO DOUBT ---> will ALL come with x64 OS; SAME for the online-builds.

I looked, oh my eyes, at BeSt bUy's configurations and only a few had 6GB - ALL {x64} the majority were 4GB or 8GB. Further, ALL the 4GB systems I randomly checked were Windows 7 Home Premium x64.

So 'something's' off here...

Yeah I don't see many anymore, but I'm sure the cheap desktops are still doing it.
