go for the HD 5770. It performs almost as good as the HD 4870 or maybe even equal to the HD 4870 which performs almost as good as the GTX 260 but it uses less power and it has DX 11. The GTX 260 is obviously still a better card, it got physx and its MUCH older despite its age its better than the newer HD 5770 but still go for the HD 5770 since the GTX 260 is obsolete.

A pair of 8800GT's will give you performance on par with a GTX280, more than a GTX260 or 5770.

i don't think gtx 260 is worthy upgrade in the long run... if you relly have the money to spend on SLI... i suggest you go for gtx 460... because a pair of these costs less than hd 5870... 5970 and gtx 480.... and of course beat both single gpu and slightly behind 5970 at much lower costs... but make sure your motherboard supports SLI so you don't have to spend additionally for the motherboard... SLI gtx 460 can be considered.. if you want to upgrade for the long term...
