Faulty Motherboard?

Hey guys, i was just wondering if there is a way to see if my motherboard is working? I have the speaker plugged in but i hear no beeps everything whirs up and i can turn it off but i'm not getting a picture on my monitor. This is really starting to worry me because if i have damaged it i have to shell out for a new one which i can't really afford right now

What cables are you using? Also, where are they plugged in properly?

VGA cable, tried multiple times and made doubly sure they were connected. I did try my HDMI but i thought i'd have more of a chance with a VGA.
