Opened a 500GB External found a 1TB

I opened a Western Digital 500gb HDD and I found a 1TB WD Caviar Green inside. Why have I only been able to use less than 500GB of this thing an dif hteres a way to utilize the full 1tb, doesn't it make it cheaper to buy externals, then open them to use them as internals?

Does it show in Disk Management as a 1-tb drive?

Green drives are usually slower (measured as rpm(s)). In general, external drives cost more when you are comparing apples vs. apples, Ie, 1-TB internal 7200 RPM(s) vs an 1-TB external 7200 RPM(S).

If the drive reports a capacity of 500GB, then perhaps WD has cut the size of the drive with a HPA.

Try to restore the full native capacity with a tool such as HDAT2 or HDD Capacity Restore Tool.
