And i3 will not work on the motherboard and you can't change the socket itself you need to buy an entirely new motherboard.

Your current CPU runs on a LGA 775 board, the I3's are LGA 1156 motherboards.

Is it hard or even possible to change a laptop motherboard that supports dual core to one that supports i3-i7 or is it best to buy another laptop? see I just bought a Sony 18.5in laptop with dual core last year and realy like it and they don't make many laptops that big any more I use it for gaming and can't keep up anymore.
