The clip on the end of a PCIX16 slot

I have just bought my first motherboard with a PCIEx16 slot. The slot has a clip at the end. Can anyone tell me the function of this clip and how it works. Does it have to be lifted or clipped in some way after the expansion device has been pushed into the slot ?

basically, it helds the card in place

It is correct it is to hold the GPU in place and usually snaps in place on install. Has to be moved to take the card out again.
