More about : find processor
You should contextualize "Dx4200-09" for us. I mean you should tell us what that string of letters and numbers mean. Is it a model number of a pre-build system (it is, as it turns out after a quick Google search) or anything? Next time, provide as much info as possible so that we can help you better.
Anyways,
Your motherboard supports AM2+, which means you can also get AM3 parts like the quad core Phenom II series processors if you like. How much are you planning to spend on your processor upgrade? (See what I mean by "provide as much info as possible"? It's in a sticky at the top by the way) Also, newer processors might be unsupported by the motherboard until you update your BIOS. Do some research if you haven't already to ensure the compatibility of hardware you will be buying.
According to newegg.com, your system only has a 300W PSU. Have you upgraded your graphics card as well? You might need to order a larger PSU (maybe around 500W) as well to cope with the increasing demands of your system. What are you using the system for? If you're planning on a huge Christmas upgrade, you might want to look at some graphics cards as well if you need it.

We are comparing CPUs of the same generation and the same architecture. All else equal, more GHz = better.
Without changing the motherboard, I'm afraid the choices are limited. Besides, current gen CPUs can be used on older gen motherboards, and all the associated advantages such as lower TDP because of the smaller manufacturing process, and power management (which hasn't really changed much except for the new Turbo Core function of the hexa-core Phenoms).
Also, don't forget core count. It's currently the big thing, next to GHz.

Lol okay sorry, i should be clearer, It is a Gateway DX4200-09 and i am upgrading the whole thing. I got a new Power supply, a new video card, new HD, and new memory, which i can send links to everything i purchased, now im just looking to upgrade processor from the quad-core 1.8 to something in the mid 2.5 to 3.0 range...
8 gig of Crucial Ballistix, OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W Modular Power, EVGA GeForce GT 240 512MB DDR5 SuperClocked Ed., and a 2 tb seagate hd. All my past Asus MBs were easy to ID, but this MB is like looking just a bunch of numbers there is a white label sticker that reads 686 AMIBIOS WU85 7649.... Also another really small number right next tot he pci-e slot.... but nothing around any heat sinks or around processor
okay so i had the Evga GT 240 but am returning for the
EVGA 01G-P3-1452-TR GeForce GTS 450 (Fermi) Superclocked 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card
Also i went with
AMD Phenom II X4 925 Deneb 2.8GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 95W
i already received everything else, including the video card which i was happy with the looks but for another 25 bucks i got the 1 gig superclock... so far the 8 gig of memory and new PSU and blu ray drive work really good and i do notice a improvement with memory. i also scored a lot more points when i did the performance tests... i am looking for the BIOS update so if you find it before myself, please let me know...another thing was a cyberlink dvd and blu ray software did a test to see if my system could run the blu ray, which is another reason why im returning the card it showed a gray area that the card wasnt good enough also the processor came up in gray, but everything else was good. If you need anymore information just send a message. Also what is a good system performance test program i remember about 10 years ago they had them but i forget the names...

just the old one which was the e9100 or something... it was a 1.8 quad core, i also did put it back in to see if it saw the processor which it did... i am thinking i need to flash the bios but gateway is giving me no luck at all. they are saying it is out of warranty and they dont recommend changing anything inside of the computer. I told them "If that is so then why does it say to call the technicians incase i would want a computer upgrade. It does say this insie of the manual that came with the computer." He then was silent for about 3 mins and said it was out of warranty and could help me no further. have a good day.

waiting on win7 from newegg, they said it wont be here until after x-mas....i was thinking about finding one and downloading it, going with Windows 7 Ultimate. With all the trouble you've gone through PLEASE DON'T license a new OS to your craptastic OEM AM2 motherboard.

Hmm, i am looking for 780 pin processors right?Your OEM Foxconn 'Bengal' motherboard is an AMD 780g chipset with the south bridge sb700 (best known as, "The last south bridge that won't unlock") is killing you.
You've missed some serious motherboard upgrade opportunity, but you can still snag something like the ASRock AMD 790GX SB750.
There are also some 785G motherboards around -- starting at $65 or so.
edit: .... I fergit:
Some of the motherboards available to you have 140w CPU support and will additionally run the six-core Thubans.
And many are capable of running your PhII 925 at 14x240MHz, or higher.
It really does not matter when your processor is shown as 'unknown' when it runs at rated speed
When it down-clocks to 800MHz and won't budge - then, you got a problem
hrmm how about this one ASUS M4A78T-E http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168... or maybe suggest somthing better? he just told me i can spend 200 for a case and new motherboard...
or this is a 785G ASUS M4A785-M AM3/AM2+/AM2 AMD 785G HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...... i am leaning towards the second one, but i would really like input, im new to these new motherboards, i am more oldschool style, I am running Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe NVIDIA nForce 2 Ultra 400 xp 3200 athon. this is still my generation and still love it, i dont wanna upgrade cause im not a typical gamer. But my bro is diff he wants it for multimedia and possible gameing support with upgrades years to come where i know mine isnt upgraded much anymore. He just updated me with this is the case he wants, he has been looking and this is it
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
Or how about reccommending a 140w board cause i have seen one so far it was an ECS and the reviews were bad on it.....

Ding! Ding! Ding!
(I got mine a month ago)BUT
That motherboard requires DDR3, right? Did you work that into your plan?
the motherboard i am working on wont overclock, doesnt see processor, like the guy said, the motherboard im trying to upgrade wont unlock and is basically crap.... the new nmotherboard i am looking at doesnt support the memory i got now, mine as well start over, and beshides that the video card doesnt work hdmi so this was a complete failure
I'm waiting on everything to come by Newegg! Ill report back when i have everything hooked up. Oly thing so far i am undecided on is memory, Corsair or OCZ or Crucial... Corsair is giving me the best way to go, but Crucial is the best from what i have known and done systems in past... I just dont like th LAT timeings on the crucial and the voltage....
