No pentium is the way to go these days. The one based off of the i3 is the bottom of the intel offerings.

AMD and Intel perform similarly at the same price point so its not too hard to compare them, except in some specific applications if they are priced the same they will perform similarly except the AMD Athlon II x4s can provide a nice value advantage for things that need multiple cores. If you are comparing an AMD Phenom I to the new Pentium them the pentium might beat some of them, but if its a Phenom II, no matter which one it is it will either match of handily beat the pentium.
