I stole quite a bit of this from Davidt2115's build a couple of days ago but changes a couple of things and have a couple of questions. We are replacing a 7 year old business server with 10+ users. The server is used as a file server for graphics files, an application server for quickbooks and an access database. We are looking into installing an exchange server but not at this time.

Starting off the CPU is the same: Xeon E5620.

I'm changing the motherboard because I don't think I need the dual processors:
SuperMicro - MBD-X8SAX
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813182165&cm_re=x8sax-_-13-182-165-_-Product

I'm changing the case after mindless' comments to:
SuperMicro CSE-733TQ-645B
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811152092&cm_re=733TQ-_-11-152-092-_-Product

Keeping with the SuperMirco products, the heatsink would be:
SuperMicro SNK-P0036
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816101301&cm_re=P0036-_-16-101-301-_-Product

Memory, I've gone with mindless' suggestion again:
Patriot Signature 12GB (3 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM ECC Registered DDR3 1066 (PC3 8500) Server Memory Model PSD312G1066ERK
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220421&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-RSSDailyDeals-_-na-_-na&AID=10521304&PID=3463938&SID=

Psu: If I've read the specs right, the case comes with a 645W powersupply, which I believe to be enough for the single core and the mobo. The case was actually the one recommended on the SuperMicro site.

Drives:
3 - Western Digital WD1002FAEX 1 TB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136533&Tpk=wd1002faex
I think these will work in a server with a RAID-5 setup. Speaking of which, I think the mobo offers RAID-5 support. Does that mean I don't need a RAID controller?

If I've priced this right, I think I could save $1800 off the ProLiant quote that I got from HP.

Thanks for any help you can give.

My suggestion: DO NOT custom build a business server. Business computers, especially servers, are something that you don't want to piece together.

Go to Dell and get a good, solid $2000 business server with backup software, antivirus and a good warranty.
