Hello,
i thought i was installing windows 3.1 in the vm. I actually started installing it on the hard drive. when i realised what i did i canceled the install. now I cannot boot my computer. when I try to use the system recovery it doesn't show an installed OS and asks me for the device driver.
help

You cancelled the install but that does not return everything to where it was before. If the new install did not create a new partition to install to, it may have done a fast format on the drive before it started the install. What OS was on it to start with (Win7)? What was on the drive you want to recover? Do you have the original OS install disk? There may be a few things you can do to recover some data but a bit more info. will help.

Yes it was windows 7. I ended up using a data recovery program to get most of the data I needed. after that I had to do a full reinstall because the recovery tools wouldn't work. lesson learned
