Hey everyone,

Its been about 2 years since I built my PC and Im pretty sure its my Graphics card that died on me last night.

I had a MSI NX8800 GTS 512MB OC (G92) 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Exp 2.0 x 16 HDCP and its time to replace it. I enjoyed building my pc, but since I hadnt had any issues I havent kept up on the latest and greatest in terms of cards.

my mobo is a Gigabyte- GA-P35-Ds3L LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX

Its mostly for watching movies, usualy home stuff and some mid-level gaming (World of Warcraft and Starcraft)

I prefer Nvidia over ATI from personal experience over the years. It would be a one card solution as that all my mobo can take.

Any suggestions on which cards to look at would be awsome as Im so out of the loop for the last year.

I plan on buying a cheap card at bestbuy tonight just to see if it is infact the graphics card, butshould it be Id like to be ready to order one asap.

Thank you in advance
Craig

What is your budget? And bestbuy is highly overpriced, would you look into some online stores or frys/microcenter possibly?

You'll get better value with an ATI videocard (just read the TH charts).

I suggest a 5750 or 5770. If you have a higher budget, a 5850 but only if your monitor is 24" or larger.
Anything more powerful than a 5850 would be bottlenecked by your CPU unless you're running an E8600 at 4 Ghz or faster.

I wasnt concerned with budget, though I dont need bleeding edge. At the time my card (the 8800 GTS) was $225. Less then that wouldnt be bad, but in that general range would be fine.

Im an running an e8400 Wolfdale 3.0 Ghz. I was only gonig to BB to buy a cheap card to test that its definately the graphics card thats down and then return the card and order one online.

I have a samsung 22" widescreen which is fine for my purposes.

Why buy a cheap card at Best Buy if you intend on replacing it anyways? Just go buy one :p If it's not your card, so you have an awesome replacement. Could be the PSU as well or MB.

First question is what power supply do you have?
Second, what is your budget.
Third, these are my recommendations assuming your PSU can handle the higher end ones. They are in order of price and performance.

ATI 5770 1GB~$150-$160
NVIDIA GTX460 768MB ~$200
NVIDIA GTX460 1GB ~$230
NVIDIA GTX470 ~ $300 (For slightly better performance than 5850)
ATI 5850 ~$300 (For better power efficiency over GTX470)

I have a Corsair 550 VX - 550W.

Whats happened is when I turn the power on everything seems ok, fans spinning whatnot, cps seems to be dong its post noises and normally the fan on the graphics card slows down and it all is fine.

The fan on the card is not slowing at all and the monitor just remains blank while the fan spins at breakneck speeds.

Id hate to build a whole new pc after only 2 years, but if i have to... ugh. I know I can salvage my HD and a least keep that. With all my data and pictures, movies and wow settings)

A few things to try:
1) reset CMOS
2) reseat graphics card
3) Unplug any other expansion cards, hard drives, CD/DVD drives, etc and just see if it boots to the BIOS.
4) If that doesn't work keep everything unplugged and just used one stick of RAM. If that doesn't work try the other stick. Read your motherboard manual to see which slot a single stick needs to be in to function. (this will hopefully weed out an bad RAM sticks)

Just some things to try. If you can get your hands on another graphics card of some type, try that first. The VGA fan with run full bore alot of times of the boot process hangs. It doesn't always mean it's the graphics card.

get a 5770. it would be fine for your res, and easy on your psu. its going for 199$ at best buy right now, though you could get it for around 150-160$ online, if you want best buy's waranty and ease then get it there. great card.

I think when I built it i had spent around 225 for the 8800 GTS 512 (2 1/2 years ago)

anywhere between 150-250 I would think. Im running a 550 Power supply, so I have to keep that in mind

I see a whole bunch on newegg at around 215-240.... do you have a manufacturer you prefer to others? My original card was an MSI.

I see EVGA and Gigabyte (who Ive heard of) and then Sparkle? , Zotac? and Palit.

I see the card has two 6 pin PCI power slots, I feel nubby even asking this, but IM fairly certain my psu only has one 6pin connection
