There are many reasons which may causes external usb hard drive to be corrupted. One common one is virus attack, so you may want to scan the usb hard drive with anti-virus software, Microsoft security essential and AVG free are free ones

Does the usb hard drive been detected by computer? If not, you may go to device manager and then assign a drive letter to the usb drive, follow this guide

Hi,

It clearly indicates that your drive was corrupted, so in order to access files from it you need to make use of USB drive recovery software. When I am facing the same problem, I have used this tool and finally I was able to recover data from thumb drive successfully. here's the guide
