I am now thinking I may not have enough ram for editing/rendering in Premiere and using Photoshop

Video + LGA 1155:
CPU i7-2600K ; Adobe products justify Hyper-Threading CPUs.
RAM 4x4GB DDR3 1600 MHz ; the more the better {faster}
GPU GTX 570
//see Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 GPU http://www.adobe.com/products/premiere/tech-specs.html

This is what I would use, and IMO a second ODD like a BluRay writer. The (2) HDDS in RAID 1. Also, Adobe is accelerated with a fast SSD Scratch drive; an alternative is the MAX IOPS OCZ Vertex 3 SSD.

Thanks, but I ALREADY ordered the whole thing! Just need to know about the ram (well, and whether I need a discreet gpu too)

What do you think about those two things jaq?

what ram would you recommend specifically at a reasonable price?

OK, thanks, I ordered the 16G corsair (low profile) will return the Patriots.

Also, since I have a) never overclocked a cpu; and b) never configured an integrated gpu, can I overclock the hd3000 and enable quick sync but the mobo will know to default to the discrete gpu depending on codec or task? (is this a stoopid question?!)

ANS: A = Easy CPU Multiplier and raise the vCore to keep stable. Use Prime95 to stress and HWMonitor for temps.

ANS: B = Yes, you can raise the GPU Clock; see -> http://www.anandtech.com/show/4083/the-sandy-bridge-rev... ; Gaming on an iGPU is not fun nor recommended the Intel HD Graphics are fine for 2D.

not gaming at all, just rendering/editing & photoshopping & syncing mp3 player & file sharing

Answer is still the same.

Photoshop is CPU + RAM + SSD/HDD
MP3 is CPU
Video Quick Sync {MPEG-2/4} is Intel HD Graphics + RAM + SSD/HDD
Video non Virtu {Encoding} is CPU + GPU + RAM + SSD/HDD ; depending on the encoding codec used
