Hi - I use the automatic update feature, and one of the updates
installed changed my screen resolution and seems to have deleted the
option I prefer (1400x1050). I've tried all the usual graphic/display
fixes and none of them are working.

Any thoughts as to how I can get that option back? Could I use System
Restore to go back a day or so and get my old resolution back? What
would that do to my system?

Thanks,
Dana

Turn the machine off. Then turn it on again. (Assuming windows XP or
2000.) After you start to get the bios screens up press F8, and keep
pressing it until you get a menu up that gives you a selection of safe boot.
Select that mode. Let it boot. When you finally get to a windows screen,
then right click on the mouse when the pointer is on the main screen.
Select properties, then select settings. Put it back to where you want it.
Then do a reboot. That should take care of the issue. As an alternative,
you can use an external monitor capable of the resolution you specified
before.

I did just as you said, but when I get to the settings screen, the
resolution bar is locked.

Any other thoughts? Thanks.

More information would be useful. No update installed by Microsoft
automatic update should do what you described, as they only
automatically install critical updates. They offer driver updates, but
they are not automatically installed.

In any case, however, an LCD display should always be operated at the
native resolution of the panel, whatever that is.

If a software change was made, system restore should get you back to
where you were.

Then follow Barry's advice, or get an external monitor. Another option is
to go in and delete the video driver and then let the system discover it and
install it again. You can do that under safe mode as well.
