Hello,

I have upgraded my system yet I am still a half a year away from upgrading the montior.

I am currently on i7 920, rampage extreme, 6gb ddr3 1600, now my question is the gpu.

Running 1280x768 would you go for the the 4890 or the 4870x2, bearing in mind the monitor upgrade will be 6 months away (possibly more )...

I am mainly playing fsx etc.

Thanks

Honestly, neither. Given that monitor resolution, I wouldn't bother with a high end GPU until you get a better monitor.

Get a 5770 and spend the rest on a higher end monitor, a 4850 can play stuff on high or max at that resolution easily.

If you are getting them retail then IMO there are newer and better and/or equivalent cards available out there..

They're both 2nd hand.

The 4890 is around 100 pounds and the 4870x2 is 150 pounds.

What resolution monitor will you be buying in the future?

Almost any available card will be an overkill for that resolution.. Nevertheless, those are some nice deals on such powerful cards.. For 50 pounds extra, i'd grab the 4870X2 here.. But it might become a closed route in future with no genuine upgrade options.. For a similar price another option would be to grab a GTX 460 1GB card for now and add another in future when you move to some higher resolution(s)..

4890 is likely a better idea for 50 cheaper than the 4870x2
and as mention either would be fine for that resolution

I have two CrossfireX rigs, One listed bellow and the other with a 4870X2 + 4870.

When playing FSX I tend to use the CrossfireX profile software (which helps achieve near linear CrossfireX scaling) available here: http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=293467

The issue with CrossfireX are AMDs profiles... not the drivers themselves.

The 4870X2 would be the better card by far for this game if you use the high res addons.

A GTX 460 wouldn't be near enough with those addons.

As for how they compare: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/174?vs=180

Just get the 4890

4890 will be better as both are wayy overkill for that resolution and you'll save 50 pounds...
