5870 now or wait for the 6000 series?

I am looking to get a 5870 GPU, and I was wondering if I should get it now or wait and see what the 6000 series brings to the table. I don't need a 5870 as of right now ( I can wait); I just don't want to get a 5870, then by the end of the year have it be out dated by the new 6000 series.

More about : 5870 wait 6000 series

No , the 5870 would never go outdated so fast. yes, if you can wait, you can wait for the 6xxx series to get launched, as the 5xxx series will fall in price. and thereafter you can buy the 5870 in low price or if you have some more money you can get two of them to get a cross-fire.

there definitly won't be a 6000 series by the end of the year unless southern island takes the name, which is really just a revised 5xxx series card, So performance won't really blow the current gen cards out of the water, but it's really up to you, you'll never be able to stay on top of tech, not matter when you buy a card or a cpu or whatever a new and better one is bound to be there soon, so if you don't really need the 5870, and content with your current set up buy all means wait,

if anything new cards will come out or prices will slowly fall, either way it's good for you

Thanks everyone for the FAST replies. So you don't think that the 6000 series will be out by the end of this year? I wondering what the 6000 series will bring to the table? The 5000 series brought DX 11 support and Eyefinity.

It looks like they will be availible by November and it is the southern island.

ok that makes sense, really i see this generation as being pretty similar to the 8xxx to 9xxx for nvidia a few years ago, not so much just rebadged as nvidia did be really only modifying the current 5xxx series instead of a brand new arch

Pure speculation: It might be a die rev with slight fixes similar to 4870/4890 type update. A die shrink with minor fixes/changes will enable ATI to get more DIE per wafer (more money).

I think it'd be a better approach to wait for the 6XXX series launch.. ATI did i fine job when they released the 4XXX series over the 3XXX series which again were both based on the DX 10 platform.. If that is any sort of indication then the 6XXX series is going to be a fine (though not massive) upgrade over the 5XXX series.. I would add though that a 58XX/5970 purchase is not going to be outdated in any regards.. That sort of terminology should be reserved for when DX 12 based cards get launched..

ATI's sticking with 40 nm for 6XXX series so personally (so no huge difference with the 5XXXs), i'd wait for the 6XXX series to come out for the sake of the price drop, grab a 5870 or 5970 and then wait for the 7XXX series or whatever

the top of the line cards of ati is 5870/5970 and this cards did amazing job by gaming and performance if they gonna realese newer cards such as the 6000 series i think it will have more features thats it
