Should I upgrade the memory for a new CPU?

Hey there!

I'm running a system that's on 24/7 used for BOINC and Folding@Home. The specifications are as follows:

MSI K9A2 Platinum
AMD Athlon 64 6000+ Dual Core
2GB 667MHz memory

Now, I will upgrade this CPU to an AMD Phenom X4 9850 Black Edition CPU at 2,5GHz.

My question, do I need to upgrade the RAM as well? Wil it slow the CPU performance potential much?

Welcome to Tom's Forum! :)

No, you're wasting money; specs DDR2 533/667/800/1066 the differences between 667 and 1066 MHz 1~2%. The only thing that makes sense is more RAM. Keep in mind if you're running a 32-bit OS the net gain for 4GB 667 DDR2 might be 1.0GB~1.5GB out of 2GB added.

Ah, thats awesome man. Saved me another euro. :)

I got the Phenom for free because it'll be used for charity. When I look in the task manager I don't really need more ram, I'm not using much more than I need. Maybe 50-60%. No problem.

Thanks for your help!
